When you think about it, it's really amazing just how unaware we are of how the many jobs that make our daily lives possible get done. We buy our computers from big box stores in an Aurora zip code or somewhere else, our vehicles get fixed at the mechanics', our health needs are taken care of by professionals.
But how are all these jobs carried out? And why are they all so expensive? Well, understanding one can help understand the rest. Almost every job requires specific tools and parts, and those parts have become more expensive over the years as technology has progressed. Let's take a look at a few jobs in which you are likely to fork over a large amount of cash, and some of the reasons why that may be.
Health Care
Many Americans are very aware of the rising costs of healthcare. As far as where all that money goes, though, all we can really point to are the salaries of our doctors. These may seem exorbitant but for what doctors put into the job they are not, which is a subject for another article.
However, we all have to remember that doctors are just the front lines of the health industry. There are many different aspects which our money is paying for when we make a trip to the hospital. X-ray protection and machinery, overhead costs, nurses, lab techs, support staff, and research facilities are all part of the costs of a hospital visits. Every tool you see, from the computer on the admissions desk to surgical equipment, costs money and needs to be paid for.
Computers
Speaking of computers, in themselves they offer a considerable expense, in the hospital and everywhere else. Again, all we may see is the monitor, keyboards, and mouse, but the amount of engineering that goes into your average computer these days is incredible. Crimp terminals and fans protect the system from overheating, motherboards are made up of thousands of pieces of tiny equipment, all of which are put together using precision tools.
It's no wonder that computers cost so much, and really it's no wonder why so many break down so often. There are a lot of pieces to keep working all at once for optimal function. And all of that work has to be done in factories with the latest in safety equipment, from fire sleeves to protective gear for workers.
Auto work
One of the expensive jobs we are always amazed at are those conducted by mechanics. Sure, automobile workers today are paid far more than the job is worth, considering how many people can actually do it. Still, even the labor fees you'll see only account for part of the costs of a job done at an Aurora or London auto body shop.
There are also environmental fees levied for the use of basket strainers both in the shop and at manufacturer's plants, shipping of parts, and other fees.
Sometimes, being familiar with the different tools used to get jobs done can help us understand the expense a bit better.
