Is it time to put your home for sale in Georgetown Ontario and make the move to your new Aurora home in Illinois? Moving is stressful at the best of times, but a move across borders can add a whole new level of frustration to the process.
The United States has completely different regulations for goods and household items than Canada does, and you can't expect to just move smoothly north to south. Granted, there is a lot less hassle than if you were moving from some Toronto real estate to France, but you still have to dot your I's and cross your T's. Let's take a look at some things to consider as you move your household items.
Customs Slips
One of the nastier bits of business in the move will be customs, which is going to take up a lot of your time. You can spend a lot less time at the border crossing after leaving your Moore Park Toronto real estate behind for good if you fill out the paperwork ahead of time. Obtain a US Customs 3299 Form from the agency who is helping you move and fill it out completely. Don't forget the names of all family members , and photocopy your Visa and other pieces of ID as well. You'll also need to include your SIN on the form. The purpose of the 3299 is to allow former Canada residents to move their items to the US duty free.
Vehicles
A lot of people worry about the expense and the details of moving their cars and trucks from parking lots in Richmond Hill condos to real estate in Aurora, but in fact a vehicle is one of the easier things to get across the border. All you need to do is get a vehicle inspection done from the dealer, make sure you have the necessary documents to prove the vehicle is yours (VIN and so on) and it's in. Those documents include the vehicle's registration and insurance papers. If it's a domestic car manufactured in either country, you won't even have to pay duties on it!
Pets
Living things are one of the most difficult to move across borders, no matter what country you are relocating to. Take some advice from a couple of Brampton realtors who had a bad experience in the past, and make sure your pets' licenses and vaccinations are totally up to date.
